Cisgender

Our Definition

a person whose sex assigned at birth corresponds with their gender identity; a person who is not transgender.

Real Life Examples

Susan has examined her gender identity and realized she is most comfortable identifying as the gender assigned to her at birth.

Tula has not thought about his gender identity very much. He has never felt uncomfortable being a man, and has never had cause to consider being anything else.

Common Practices

Everyone is different! You'll see this repeated throughout our website and glossary. Common practices for cisgender individuals include, but certainly aren't limited to
  • Using some form of the name one was given at birth.
  • Having strangers correctly guess your pronouns most of the time.
  • Rarely having to “explain” your gender identity to anyone.
