Hard Limit

Hard Limit

Our Definition

an activity that a party will not engage with under any circumstances.

Common Practices & Experiences

Everyone is different! You'll see this repeated throughout our website and glossary. Common practices and experiences involving hard limits include, but certainly aren't limited to:
  • Stating these limits to one’s partners as one establishes a dynamic.
  • Occasionally re-evaluating one’s hard limits due to changing needs over time. New things may need to be added, or old things taken off if feelings are different.
  • Reserving hard limits for things that are actively bad for one’s health and well-being.
Public play is a hard limit for Talia, so she makes it clear to her partners that she won’t be attending any play parties.
Ryn’s hard limits include fluid bonding and certain specific types of role play.

If you'd like to be quoted in our glossary, please email us a single paragraph describing the practices you'd like to share, along with whatever name you'd like to be credited with.
If your definition differs from ours, tell us how and why! We want to illustrate as many sides of kink as we can to both normalize kink and the diversity within it.
