Our Definition

a person who does not conform to their culture’s gender norms. This term can describe both trans or cis individuals.

Common Practices

Everyone is different! You'll see this repeated throughout our website and glossary. Common practices for gender non-conforming individuals include, but certainly aren't limited to:
  • Presenting in a way that does not align with one’s own culture’s view of one’s assigned gender.
  • Shopping for clothing across various gender labeled departments
  • Being interested in pursuits that your culture views as unusual or inappropriate for the gender you were assigned.

Pietre was assigned male at birth and identifies as a man, but enjoys wearing dresses and stilettos because they make him look awesome.

Willow presents androgynously and accepts all pronouns.
Chrysanthemum is an agender person who grew up AFAB in a rigidly gendered subculture, and the fact that they enjoyed wearing pants and disliked dresses singled them out, in ways it might not have in other contemporary cultures.
Geraldine is a cisgender butch lesbian.

We want your take!

Help us improve the glossary! We're looking for:

  • Anecdotes for kinks in practice, tell us about a scene or an interaction that you feel best illustrates an entry
  • Suggestions for topics to add
  • Short stories to help illustrate each glossary entry - true or fictional stories that demonstrate a topic. (1 page, tops!)
  • Folks who disagree - tell us why we're wrong!

We want to illustrate as many sides of kink as we can to both normalize kink, sexuality, and the diversity within it all, and we can't do that alone!
