Our Definition

a slang term for the uncomfortable feeling one may get when hearing about or witnessing certain kinky activities which they do not wish to participate in, but harbor no prejudice against the play or people who participate.

The term is used instead of “disgust” due to the latter’s association with moral judgement.

Common Practices

Everyone is different! You'll see this repeated throughout our website and glossary. Common practices involving squicks include, but certainly aren't limited to:
  • Communicating with partners regarding limits related to squicks.
  • Trying to avoid instances where one would be exposed to a squick directly.
  • Not getting involved with discussions centering around a squick.
  • Being respectful of people who enjoy your squick.
  • No moral judgment on squick
  • A sense of innate disinclination towards the squick, as a matter of personal taste.

Bella does not like the idea of pet play, so she does not engage with discussions of it in kink spaces.

Aaron chooses not to participate in exhibitionism because it makes him feel uncomfortable to consider.
Cheryl loves bondage photos but tends to look away quickly when she sees ball-gags being used in these photos, since she personally feels she would hate to wear a ball-gag.

We want your take!

Help us improve the glossary! We're looking for:

  • Anecdotes for kinks in practice, tell us about a scene or an interaction that you feel best illustrates an entry
  • Suggestions for topics to add
  • Short stories to help illustrate each glossary entry - true or fictional stories that demonstrate a topic. (1 page, tops!)
  • Folks who disagree - tell us why we're wrong!

We want to illustrate as many sides of kink as we can to both normalize kink, sexuality, and the diversity within it all, and we can't do that alone!
